They’re dark, mysterious, eternal and have intriguing qualities that leave us mesmerised. Yes, we’re talking about vampires, who with their baffling lifestyle, draw youngsters towards them. While the Twilight series brought vampire tales into the limelight like never before, current TV serials like The Vampire Diaries and True Blood, which portray vampires too, are huge hits. Now there’s even a desi vampire story called Pyar Kii Ek Kahani on the telly! What is so fascinating about vampires?

Eighteen-year-old Yeshashree Prasanna finds their super strength and super abilities very fascinating. “They do so many things that we can’t and I really like the idea. I’d like to go into a world like that,” she says. Yeshashree has also read House Of Night, a fantasy vampire-based series by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast. “In the book, the vampires live with other creatures and the humans know about their existence,” she says.
Her favourite vampire is Emmet from Twilight. “He’s such a funny character — he’s so strong and he’s always joking about it. I’ve heard from my pals that Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Dairies is also very interesting,” she adds.
Student Renita Coelho, on the other hand, thinks vampires are meant to be serious blood suckers and not vegetarians like the Twilight folks! “Their immortality and the way they seek pleasure and satisfaction by drinking a human’s blood is fascinating,” she says.
Watching vampires onscreen gives you the ‘I wish I had that power’ feeling, says Shreya Animesh, a 19-year-old engineering student. “Their super powers are cool and different from Spiderman or Superman,” she adds. Edward Cullen from Twilight is her favourite vampire. “Everything about him is nice. He’s portrayed in a positive way and he can control himself from drinking human blood. The vampires who drink human blood are disgusting and scary,” she says. However, she likes Edward Cullen from the Twilight books and not the movie. Shreyas has read The Southern Vampire Mysteries, the book-series that True Blood is based on. “In the book, vampires sleep in coffins and are way better than the Twilight vamps.”
For student Ashwini Ajaykumar, Eric Northman from True Blood is the best vampire ever. “He was a Viking when he turned into a vampire. He’s tall, handsome and also very rude. He has this amazingly different personality when he’s with the people he cares about. These characters can be bad and bad is good,” she laughs, adding, “They live for ages, have lived in a different century and are living history — all this makes them interesting. The danger of interacting with them gives an adrenaline rush.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
