Valthaty in IPL Centurions Club
The blazing hundred by Paul Valthaty was only the 13th century in 187 IPL games, which clearly how difficult it is even for seasoned pros to register a three-figure score in T-20 cricket.
The relatively unknown Valthaty joined three other Indian batsmen in the IPL centurion’s list. A look at the table reveals a few interesting details. Barring Yusuf Pathan, who boasts of the highest strike rate during a century knock, only M. Vijay and Shuan Marsh all other batsmen were unbeaten.
A three-figure knock in a T20 usually spells success and the IPL has been no different. Only Andrew Symonds and Yusuf Pathan have ended up on the losing side after scoring a century. Here is a recap of the four special knocks dished out by Indian batsmen.
Manish Pandey: Royal Challengers Bangalore did not wait for a day to snap up Manish Pandey from Mumbai Indians. The selection proved to be a masterstroke as Pandey struck a fine hundred against eventual champions Deccan Chargers on a true Centurion track. Not blessed with strong shoulders, the youngster did it all with precise timing and placement.
Yusuf Pathan: The Brabourne Stadium has seen some of the finest knocks in the longer version but the bludgeoning knock from Yusuf Pathan was something else. Pathan made the fastest IPL hundred by dispatching anything that was in striking range. The knock will stay in memory for long and it was the last word in power. Shane Warne said it was the best innings he has ever seen and not without a reason.
M. Vijay: To treat Shaun Tait like a medium pacer takes some doing and M. Vijay achieved that with style. It was savagery with a special touch as Vijay struck some of the biggest sixes ever seen at the MAC Stadium. The opener was in a purple patch and this knock showed the world his ability to play the shortest format. Of the four Indian hundreds in the league this was easily the most stylish.
Paul Valthaty: Announcing himself to the world with a classy hundred, Valthaty is a batsman built in the classical mould. For the 27-year-old, power is a by-product derived from supreme balance at the crease.
He might have arrived late but even if he manages to do half of what he managed on Wednesday on a regular basis, bowlers will surely be running for cover.
