Ex-top cop jailed over G-8 violence
Genoa (Italy), : An Italian court has sentenced the country’s former police chief Gianni De Gennaro to two years in prison for trying to cover up brutal police assaults of protesters at the G-8, in the northern city of Genoa in 2001. De Gennaro, who was the national police chief between 2000 and 2007, had previously been acquitted last November, but Genoa’s court of appeal upheld a challenge to that ruling by the public prosecutor’s office. De Gennaro was involved in pressuring Genoa’s head of police to change his testimony in a trial against officers for violence against protesters, the appeals judges said. The officers were involved in a notorious night raid at a school in which three people were left in a coma.
