US drone kills 8 Germans in Pak
Oct. 8: Pakistani officials said on Tuesday five German and three local militants were killed in a US missile strike in Pakistan’s rugged mountain border. The Pakistani intelligence officials said that the US missile strike had killed five German militants of Turkish taking shelter in a house in the town of Mir Ali in North Waziristan, a known hub for foreign militants with links to the al Qaeda.
The US believes that a cell of Germans and Britons is at the heart of a terror plot against European cities — a plan they link to the al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. The terror cell is believed to have been in hiding in the region. A second Briton was killed in a US strike last month.
Germany’s foreign ministry said it was investigating the reports but was unable to comment further.
The missile strikes came on the heels of a US and British warning for Americans travelling in Europe to be on alert for possible terror attacks at tourist centres in European capitals. The British police used sniffer dogs to patrol subways, while soldiers and mounted police were dispatched to two major churches in Paris — Notre Dame and Sacre Coeur.
French paramilitary troops were also seen patrolling around the Eiffel Tower — which has been evacuated twice in recent weeks for unspecified threats. Police in southern France arrested 12 suspects in sweeps against suspected Islamic militant networks, including three men linked to a network recruiting fighters for Afghanistan, officials said. The roundups were part of two entirely different counterterrorism cases being supervised by judges, police said.
In Nairobi, Kenyan police said they had arrested a suspected German militant and deported him shortly after issuing an alert about his presence in the country.
