TN N-plant 1st unit soon: PM
Clearing uncertainty, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced here on Friday that the first unit of the Koodankulam nuclear power project in Tamil Nadu will be operationalised in a “couple of weeks”, but India and Russia did not sign any agreement on the construction of the third and fourth units, which was earlier expected.
After talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev at the Kremlin, Dr Manmohan Singh also declared that the second unit will be commissioned six months later, and gave an assurance that there will be no problem relating to safety and that “temporary problems” due to the agitation at Koodankulam would be overcome.
The direct talks between the two leaders ahead of the delegation-level dialogue lasted nearly two hours, after which the two countries signed a crucial agreement for technical assistance in the joint production of 42 more frontline Sukhoi-MKI 30 jets.
It was among the five agreements initialled in the presence of the two leaders, besides a joint statement on the Indo-Russian strategic partnership. India currently has a fleet of 120 Sukhois. — PTI
