Tatas keen on building London Olympic arch?
Aug. 1: Is Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata in talks to erect an arch in the City of London for the Olympic Games in 2012?
The Tatas are the largest manufacturer in Britain and own Jaguar Land Rover, Corus and Tetley Tea. The details about the Tata interest in building the arch, which has been likened to a croquet hoop, were revealed by the Sunday Times.
The 360-feet arch of white frame, designed by Mexican architect Fernando Donis, who is based in the Netherlands, is intended to mark the start of the final leg of the Olympic torch relay, which will run from Aldgate, on the boundary between the City of London and the East End, to the Olympic Park.
The arch will cost between £400,000 and £1 million and is expected to be branded with the name of its sponsor, the report added. The sculpture has been described the Tata Group’s first cultural project in Britain.
The Tata interest in building the arch comes after Indian-born billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, chairman and chief executive of ArcelorMittal, in March announced he would fund Mumbai-born sculptor Anish Kapoor’s looping and twisting 118-metre tower, made of steel, at the Olympic Park in east London.
The ArcelorMittal Orbit, will cost £19.1 million, of which £16 million will be provided by ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel company.
