Taliban hits US, Nato in Kabul
Taliban gunmen with suicide bombs and heavy weaponry launched coordinated attacks in Kabul on Tuesday, targeting Nato headquarters and the US embassy, killing at least six people. The attacks dealt a humiliating blow to the Afghan
government and Nato, underscoring the worsening security situation in Kabul.
Gunbattles raged five hours after the attack began around 1.30 pm. Afghan officials said attackers were hunkered down in a multi-storey building under construction that overlooks Nato headquarters and US embassy. All Indians in Kabul were reported safe.
In New Delhi the Indian government ordered “maximum security” for its embassy in Kabul and consulates in Kandahar, Jalal-abad, Mazar-e-Sharif and Herat amid fears of a fresh wave of attacks on Indians, including those working on development projects across the country.
Meanwhile, US secretary of state Hillary Clinton vowed that the “brave” Americans who work at the embassy would not be put off by such attacks.
