Rushdie unchivalrous: NY woman
Indian-born British writer Sir Salman Rushdie is once again in a controversy: he has been accused of unchivalrous behaviour by first wooing, then dumping a New York socialite on Facebook.
Magazine editor Devorah Rose, who posted a photo of herself and Rushdie at a dinner, now describes the 64-year-old writer as “unchivalrous” after he insisted the two did not have a romantic relationship.
Rose, who edits Social Life magazine, had on November 25 posted the photo with a message: “great Times w@Salman-Rushdie. Come back to the states soon so that we can have a do over :):):):)”
When Rushdie, married four times previously, denied any romantic relationship, she posted a link to Facebook messages between her and the writer. “Mr Rushdie’s intentions, like his ridiculous retort, is the definition of unchivalrous behaviour,” she said on Twitter.
The Facebook messages showed Rushdie had asked her out on a date in May. But then he seems to have broken off on Facebook. “I’m sorry to say I don’t feel able to pursue what we only just began... I have to confess that I haven’t really recovered from the recent collapse of a two-year relationship... Our lives and worlds (and ages) are very different, and hard to reconcile,” he apparently wrote.
But he met her again for dinner: it was photograph of this that led to a war of words between the two.
