Pak gunmen storm hospital, 12 killed
Gunmen attacked the Jinnah hospital Monday night in this eastern Pakistani city, killing at least 12 people, including four policemen, and injuring several others, media reports said.
About three to four gunmen stormed into the emergency ward of the hospital where several injured people of Friday’s mosque attacks were admitted, Xinhua reported. The attackers held patients and hospital staff hostage to thwart the police who arrived at the scene. They later escaped after a brief exchange of fire with security forces.
Geo TV said attendants of the hospital are among the dead. The attack comes four days after Taliban rebels killed at least 62 people at two mosques of the minority Ahmadi sect in Garhi Shahu and Model Town areas of Lahore. Many people were also injured in the attacks.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies launched a massive crackdown across Pakistan’s Punjab province on Tuesday, arresting 25 suspects after militants made a brazen bid to free one of their members, arrested for the Ahmadi mosque carnage, from a hospital here.
Heavily armed gunmen drove into the hospital compound to free their accomplice, but were beaten by alert securitymen.
