N. Zealand, Tonga tsunami warning after 7.8 quake

A tsunami warning was issued for New Zealand, the Kermadec Islands and Tonga on Thursday after a powerful 7.8-magnitude undersea earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

The quake struck at 07.03am Thursday (1903 GMT Wednesday) at a depth of 48 kilometres (29.8 miles), 211 kilometres (131 miles) east of Raoul Island, one of New Zealand's Kermadec Islands, the United States Geological Survey said.
