Mother smothers seven-month baby to death

A seven-month-old girl was smothered to death by her psychotic mother who developed an addiction to cannabis after her husband's confession that he had made one of her best friends pregnant during an affair.

Carly Jacques, 32, developed mental depression and turned to cannabis after her husband confessed that he had made one of her best friends pregnant during an 18-month affair.

Jacques then started taking cannabis and developed mental problems. By the time she smothered daughter Skye, when the infant was seven months old, she was suffering from delusions and had become convinced neighbours were out to harm her and the child, The Daily Mail reported.

Last year in October her husband woke up at their home in Leicester to find Jacques clutching the 'obviously blue' body of their daughter Skye, the paper reported.

She was holding a blade in her hand and said: "What have I done?" She then slashed her own wrists as her husband struggled to disarm her.

Jacques then slashed her neck with a carving knife before she was again disarmed and taken to hospital.

However, the Leicester Crown Court on June 7 ruled that Jacques needed to be given treatment rather than punishment.
