Michelle Obama and Ann Romney in cookie face off

The upcoming US presidential election has just gotten a little bit sweeter.

For the sixth time since 1992, the two candidates for First Lady are competing in Family Circle's Presidential Cookie Bake-Off .

The contenders for the top slot are First Lady Michelle Obama's white and dark chocolate-chip cookies and Ann Romney's M'n'M cookies.

Family Circle readers can test out the recipes and vote for their favourites on the magazine's Facebook page through August 15th.

The bake-off isn't exactly a predictor for the presidential election-though having a good baker in a White House is usually a priority for voters. For example, Cindy McCain won in 2008 with her Oatmeal Butterscotch.

Both Michelle and Ann sent tweets on Wednesday urging their fans to vote for their recipe on the social network site, with both women claiming their cookies to be family favourites.

While the votes have not yet been counted, pundits are already weighing in on Twitter.

"I would actually prefer a presidential cookie bake-off," the New York Daily News quoted Jamelle Bouie, a fellow at the liberal American Prospect, as writing.

"A modern man knows how to bake treats."

And Eric Kleefeld of Talking Points Memo asked if the contest could be totally scrapped.

"Can this country please nominate a woman for president soon, so we can be rid of the First Lady bake-off forever?" he said.

Family Circle said that McCain's victory was the only time the bake-off has not predicted the general election outcome.
