Meet the UK fish-taster whose tongue is worth £4m!

A fish-taster of a British seafood company is getting her tongue insured for more than 4million pounds.

Bosses at Young’s Seafood are so protective of worker Jenny Douglas’s palate that they are willing to fork out 32,000 pounds a year for the unusual insurance policy.

It means her tongue, taste buds and sense of smell will be worth more than model Heidi Klum’s 1,150,000-pounds-legs and singer Bruce Springsteen’s 3,500,000-pounds-voice.

Douglas of Grimsby, tests 60 pieces of seafood each day as Young’s chief fish-taster.

She protects her assets by avoiding spicy food, hot drinks and alcohol, which can reduce taste.

“I love my job. I make sure our products give customers the best, freshest and tastiest fish possible,” the Daily Express quoted Douglas as saying.

“Even though I eat so much fish at work, I still enjoy eating fish at home, too.

“I eat at least two meals of fish a week. Halibut and cod are my favourites. However, there is one thing I really don’t like and that’s fish bones,” she said.

Her passion for fish comes from her grandfather who worked as a deep-sea fisherman out of Grimsby docks.

“He taught me the basics of seafood, how to establish the freshness of whole fish and where to find the bones. My fascination with fish grew from there,” said Douglas.

Her bosses are seeking to insure her taste buds with Lloyds of London.

Douglas, who was affectionately nicknamed ‘he Codmother’by her colleagues, tries a sample of all 80,000 tons of fish and seafood bought by Young’s each year.

“We are proud to be the experts in fish and it is people like Jenny who make sure our products are the best they can be,” said her boss Leendert den Hollander.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
