Kayani survives attack
Pakistan Army Chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Tuesday survived an attempt on his life as terrorists fired four rockets on his convoy in tribal South Waziristan, officials said. “The Army Chief is safe. He had left when the terrorists fired the rockets,” a security official told this newspaper from the site.
“The attack took place just when the Army Chief left. There were no casualties,” he added. Gen. Kayani, who started a fresh term as head of the Army last week, was visiting there area where the military is engaged in fierce fighting with pro-Taliban militants.
Soon after the attack, security personnel retaliated with gunfire, pre-empting any further attack, he said. Also on Tuesday, Balochistan chief minister Nawab Aslam Khan Raeesani narrowly escaped a blast that killed four people in Quetta. The blast occurred a few yards from his residence, the police said.
“The CM was safe but the blast severely damaged vehicles of his squad,” the official added.
