An iPhone app to find free condoms
New York: The Health Department in New York unveiled a free iPhone application on Valentine’s Day that allows New Yorkers to input an address and find five nearby places to grab a free condom.
Monica Sweeney, the agency’s point person for HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control, said the app was developed to reach everyone having sex.
“The younger generation uses their iPhone and we want to make it convenient for them to access condoms,” the New York Daily News quoted her as saying.
Officials said since Valentine’s Day often inspires couples to get frisky, it was a fitting launch date.
“A lot of people’s minds turn to matters of the heart on Valentine’s Day and matters of the heart often lead to matters of the body, so we think a lot of people use them that day,” Sweeney said.
New Yorkers can also download the application on the Android or go to www.nyc.gov/health and type in their zip code to find locations with free NYC Condoms.
With the aid of GPS, the app will give walking, driving and subway directions to the site.
Sweeney said New York teens are more likely to use condoms than their counterparts across the country.
But she added “as long as there are people getting STDs, unwanted pregnancies and HIV there aren’t enough” people using them.
