Hyderabad couple chides son in Oslo, jailed

A couple from Hyderabad has been arrested by the Norwegian police in Oslo for allegedly 'excessively disciplining' their son, family members said here on Thursday.

V. Chandrasekhar, a TCS employee in Oslo, along with his wife Anupama was taken into custody by the police, nine months after the child complained to his schoolteachers that his parents were threatening him to send back to India for his wrongdoings, Chandrasekhar’s nephew V. Sailender claimed.

Sailender said the boy was found bringing toys from school, and the father objected to his 'hyper-activeness'. However, another report had it that the parents chided their child for urinating in classroom six months back.

Family sources said Mr Chandrasekhar had no idea about the case. He came to Hyderabad along with his wife and children in July and began working here.

When he and his wife received summons, they went back to Norway.

“They went to Oslo on November 23 and appeared before the authorities. On Wednesday we were informed by my uncle’s neighbours in Oslo that they were arrested and remanded,” Sailender said. Their children are in Hyderabad. The couple hails from Gudiwada in Krishna district.

A spokesperson of the TCS confirmed the arrest but refused to offer comment saying that it was a personal matter.

The Indian government is in said to be in talks with Norway to secure their release.

Many Indian families have run afoul of child laws especially in Europe. The most notable case was that of Anurup Bhattacharya and his wife Sagarika. Their children Abhigyan and Aishwarya were put under foster care by Norway’s Child Welfare Services after citing various charges including that the children were fed by hand, and that they slept with their parents.

The children were reunited with the family, and moved back to India earlier this year after a protracted legal battle and the intervention of the Indian government.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
