Gunmen kill eight in bloody night for Jamaican city
Gunmen killed eight people in two brutal shootings in Jamaica's Spanish Town, the tourist island's former capital, which has been the scene of a bloody gang feud, police said.
The first attack targeted a mother, her two daughters aged 21 and 11 and her 16-year-old son. The second involved an elderly man, his son, grandson and a nephew, police said on Friday.
"Two alleged perpetrators have since been shot dead by police in the nearby community of Brooklyn," said Karl Angel, director of police department communications, in a statement.
Police named the two suspects killed only as Kevin, also known by the alias "Bilbo," and Jerome "Crab" Williams.
"Both are known members of the Klansman Gang which operates in Spanish Town," the statement said.
Police said they were looking for nine other suspects, five from the Klansman gang and another four from the One Order gang, which have held the city hostage in recent years with bloody feuding.
Hundreds of people have been killed amid ongoing battles between the gangs, and hundreds more have simply fled the neighbourhood entirely.
Peter Bunting, the opposition spokesman for national security, called for "security forces to be thorough and vigorous in lawfully restoring calm to the community."
"We are also asking the citizens to exercise caution after dark, to secure their premises and to cooperate with the police," he said.
The murders come after a massive police operation in June to capture alleged druglord Christopher "Dudus" Coke.
