Flood warnings continue in Britain as sub-zero weather predicted

Britain is still struggling with heavy rain and winds as the met office and the Environment Agency on Monday warned about more floods in northeast England, Wales, Yorkshire & Humber regions.

However, the Met office also forecast a large drop in temperatures across the country from Wednesday. “Overnight frost may then bring the risk of some icy roads after the recent rain. Most parts will be dry, but eastern coastal counties will continue to see some showers, which will be of sleet or snow over the hills.”

Heavy rain on Saturday and overnight into Sunday led to severe flooding and disruption in southwest England and significant flooding in the Midlands, Wales and southern England. “The risk of flooding will continue into next week as more rain is forecast,” the Environment Agency said on Monday.

The met office predicted on Monday that 70 mm would fall in Wales and northern England on top of the rain that has already fallen over the last few days.

“The heaviest and most persistent rain on Monday is expected to be over parts of northern England and north Wales. Here we can expect between 50 and 70 mm of rain in places, continuing the risk of further flooding and travel disruption,” Eddy Carroll, met office chief forecaster, said.

“We are expecting more flooding today, and we would urge people especially in southwest, central, northern England and Wales to use the daylight hours to prepare,” Paul Mustow, head of flood incident management, said.

“We are expecting more rain throughout Monday, and are urging people to remain vigilant, and check their risk of flooding. Our teams have been out around the clock over the last few days to minimise the risks and prepare for flooding. We are continuing to deploy teams across the country to warn communities at risk,” Phil Younge, Flood Risk Manager at the Environment Agency, said.

Flood warnings have also been issued in southeast England as up to 25mm of rain is expected in some parts of the region over the next 24 hours.

There are 16 flood warnings now in force for River Thames at 10 places in Berkshire and Oxfordshire and other rivers like Churn, Blackwater, Cherwell, Windrush and Cole.
