Firefighters battle two blazes at French nuclear reactor
Firefighters on Thursday battled two blazes at a nuclear reactor that shut down automatically after smoke triggered alarms at an installation in northern France, operator EDF said.
The French firefighters ‘went into the building housing the reactor of the number two production unit of the Penly nuclear power plant to extinguish two fires,’ it said in a statement on the plant's website.
"There are no injured and the incident has no consequences for the environment," it said, adding that an emergency team had gone into the plant to check installations and make sure there were no further fires.
EDF said in an initial statement only that the reactor at the Penly plant had shut down automatically after smoke triggered an alarm.
