Chinese man injured by armed robbers in Karachi

A Chinese national was on Thursday injured in firing when he resisted an attempt by armed robbers to snatch his money outside a bank in the Pakistani port city of Karachi, the police said.

The Chinese man and a colleague were attacked in their car shortly after he had withdrawn cash from a bank in Clifton area of Karachi.

One or two armed men fired at the car after trying to snatch the Chinese man's cash and mobile phone, the police officials said.

The injured man was taken to a private hospital, where doctors described his condition as stable.

The robbers fled after the incident, witnesses said.

Some reports described the Chinese national as an engineer while others said he was an official of the Chinese consulate in Karachi. His exact identity could not immediately be ascertained.

In October, unidentified gunmen had fired at a car of the Japanese consulate in Karachi, injuring two Pakistani employees of the mission.

Many multi-national firms have their headquarters in Pakistan's financial hub, which has witnessed a spate of ethnic and political killings and violent crimes in recent months.
