China set for a great bash as Reds turn 90

Jan. 2: Riding high on economic successes but wary of political reform, the Communist Party of China that has maintained a vise-like grip on power for over 60 years is gearing up to celebrate its 90th anniversary as it faces fresh challenges of growing inequality, corruption and alienation of minorities.

The 90th anniversary will be a major event in China’s political life this year, Mr Wang Chen, director of the Information Office of the State Council told the official media here on Sunday. Chinese websites and news portals have begun running a special column describing major events in the history of the Communist Party of China (CPC) as part of the 90th anniversary celebrations of the ruling party. “Today in Party’s History”, showing the party’s milestone events in a calendar format, was compiled by the Party History Research Centre and appear on the CPC news network, cpc.people.com.cn, and websites like sina.com.cn, Xinhua reported.

The CPC was founded in 1921 with its founder leader Mao Zedong holding the party’s first national congress in Shanghai. This year’s celebrations were expected to be on grand scale to highlight China’s emergence as the second largest economy next only to US under CPC’s leadership. However, with latest surveys pointing to declining levels of confidence among the Chinese, the celebrations were expected to focus on China’s rise as a major global power.

Analysts say that the challenge for the next generation of Chinese leaders is to deal with serious issues like alienation of minorities, increasing social stratification and inequality, widespread corruption, pervasive unemployment, rising crime, and rural unrest.

Meanwhile, China’s ruling Communist party has invited the BJP president, Mr Nitin Gadkari, for a visit to further strengthen party-to-party ties. The invitation, which has been accepted, was extended by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), sources said. “Your visit to China would lead to a further promotion and strengthening of the cordial relations between the CPC and the BJP.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
