Borough of Lambeth gets NRI mayor
Neeraj Patil, a leading NRI doctor, has been elected mayor of the Borough of Lambeth here.
Forty-year-old Dr Patil succeeded councillor Christopher Wellbelove. Speaking after his election, Dr Patil said “the trust in politicians is all-time low” after 2009 MPs expenses scandal and it would be his endeavour to live up to the expectation of the people.
“Our main effort will be to restore the trust,” he said. Dr Patil is currently working as a consultant with A&E and a governor of Guys and St. Thomas Hospital in central London.
Born and brought up in Kamalapur in Gulbarga district in Karnataka, Dr Patil completed his MBBS from M.R. Medical College, Gulbarga in 1992.

Bakery sacks woman for eating a nut
Melbourne : A British woman has been sacked from a bakery she has been working at for 17 years just because she ate a single hazelnut.
According to the Bolton News, Susan Longworth, 54, slipped a chunk of chopped hazelnut into her mouth while sprinkling them on toffee cakes.
She thought nothing of it until her furious boss called her into his office at Park Cakes Bakery in Lancashire, northwest England, where within minutes she was suspended. “He said he was taking into consideration my honesty and the length of time I had been working there and I thought he was going to give me a warning,” News.com.au quoted Ms Longworth as saying. “I could not believe it when he said he was sacking me,” said Ms Longworth. —ANI

Oz woman survives 13-metre fall
Melbourne : A woman from North Queensland has survived a 13-metre balcony fall with minor injuries only.
According to a department of community safety spokeswoman, the 40-year-old woman suffered just a fractured pelvis and elbow from the fall, reports News.com.au. The incident occurred at a residence on Varley Street, Yorkeys Knob on May 26, and paramedics treated the woman at the scene and transported her in a stable condition to Cairns Base Hospital. A police spokeswoman said officers attended the scene but will not be further investigating the incident.

Death term for arsonist wife upheld
Dubai : A court in Kuwait has confirmed death sentence against a woman who allegedly killed 57 women and children in a tent fire as her husband took a second wife, her lawyer has said.
Zaid Al Khabbaz, the lawyer of the accused woman, said he would take her case to the Cassation court to overrule the verdict.
Al Khabbaz made the pledge after the court of appeals confirmed the death sentence against Nasra Al Enezi, 23, pronounced by a lower court in March on charges of “premeditated murder and starting a fire with the intent to kill.” —PTI
