7 killed in Congo music festival stampede
Seven people died and 30 were injured in a weekend stampede during a music festival held in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo, authorities said.
The stampede took place on Saturday night at the ceremony to open the eighth edition of the PanAfrican Music Festival (Fespam), reported Xinhua. It happened at the Felix Eboue Stadium in Brazzaville where the opening ceremony was taking place.
The details were made available on Sunday at a press conference by Congolese Culture and arts minister Jean Claude Gakosso.
Gakosso said the injured were out of danger and that a commission of inquiry has been set up to determine the exact cause behind the stampede. The minister said the Congolese government has decided to stop the Fespam 2011 edition.
