12 killed in US drone strikes in Pak tribal region
A series of US drone strikes targeting vehicles and a house in Pakistan's restive north-western North Waziristan tribal region killed at least 12 suspected militants, officials said on Monday.
The unmanned spy planes carried out three attacks in the region on Sunday, officials were quoted as saying by the local media. Three missiles hit a pick-up truck and a house in Lowara Mandai area near the border with Afghanistan, killing four suspected militants.
A jeep was attacked near Dand Kali area with two missiles, witnesses said. Five persons were killed in this attack. Another three suspected militants were killed when missiles targeted a car in Sherani area.
Reports said some foreign fighters were among the dead. US drones have carried out 19 attacks in the Waziristan region in September — the highest figure for a single month since the strikes began in 2004.
Most of the recent strikes have targeted Datta Khel, a region of North Waziristan tribal agency dominated by militants who carry out attacks on US and Nato forces in Afghanistan. Most of this month's strikes have targeted fighters led by militant commander Jalaluddin Haqqani.
