Zoo staff to approach KVASU
Thrissur: This 13-year-old tiger at the Thrissur zoo has been leading a painful life ever since his admission here, thanks to a deep wound on his left shoulder.
Brought from Wayanad in March this year, he is believed to have sustained the injury while being tranquilized by the forest authorities. Antibiotics did little to help him feel better, and zoo staff has finally decided to approach the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Science University for advanced treatment.
“The injury seems to have been caused by a tranquilizer bullet though we are yet to get a confirmation on this despite an investigation by the forest department. We will now be conducting a metal-detector test on the injury to find out whether any bullet is still inside it, based on which, a seven-member expert team from KVASU will conduct a surgery”, said Binoy.C.Babu, veterinary doctor at the zoo.
However, sources said that the animal had been living with the raw wound for the past five months, which, in turn, had exposed the bone. “Though the animal is now eating food and not showing any signs of injury stress, any further delay in treatment will result in septicemia”, they pointed out.
The full-grown male tiger, which weighed around 250 kilograms, was tranquilized by the forest wing and was shifted to the Thrissur zoo.
