Youth shot at trying to stop molestation

A youth was shot at by a gang of anti-socials in broad daylight as he tried to stop them from molesting a teenage girl at Baranagar, on the northern outskirts of the city, on Saturday afternoon.

The Class 10 student of Ananda Ashram Sarada Vidyapeath was walking home from school at around 1.30 pm with another girl student. Two youth started teasing and molesting her near RIC Bazar in Denmark area. The hapless girl tried to contact her family through her cellphone to no avail. In a coincidence, her neighbour Mangal Sardar was passing through the area and immediately came to her rescue.
He confronted the culprits, which lead to a verbal argument. Soon one of the culprit opened fire at him. Alerted by the gunshots, locals rushed to the spot and sensing danger both the culprits fled.
Mangal is admitted to the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital with bullet injury in one hand. His condition is stated as serious. A local woman recalled, “When I heard the sound of firing I initially thought it was a bike accident. I came out of my house and saw a youth lying on the road.”
