A youth has been arrested for allegedly raping an 18-year-old college student who was admitted to a government maternity hospital here in serious condition, a top police official said today.

"It was not a gang rape. It was a cruel act of a youth who allegedly raped the 18-year-old college student who was admitted to a government maternity hospital here with serious condition yesterday," a top police official said.

The youth, identified as Venkataih, a driver in the department of Commercial Tax, was arrested last night and has been booked on charges of rape by Narayanguda police, Additional Commissioner of Police (Coordination) A.R. Anuradha, who supervised the investigation, told reporters today.

The accused, who befriended the girl through his sister on earlier occasions, was arrested on the basis of the mobile call records of the victim, the ACP said.

The girl, who was residing along with her mother at an old-age home in Ram Nagar here, had gone to attend a service at the Baptist Church in YMCA in Narayanaguda yesterday, police said.

Venkataiah picked up the victim from near the church and took her to his office and raped her in the cellar there. Since she knew him from before, the victim did not suspect of his intentions, they said.

The accused, however, panicked after the girl started bleeding profusely. He then tried to admit her in a nearby private hospital but it refused to oblige following which he admitted her to a government maternity hospital near Nayapul.

Besides TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu and BJP state chief G. Kishan Reddy, who visited the hospital and demanded stringent action against the culprit, various women organisations also staged protests in different parts of the city.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.
