Young ‘doctors’ get week-long medical training

Alappuzha: Some 130 students from across the state are receiving one week’s training in lifestyle and communicable diseases as part of a student-doctor project introduced by Alappuzha district panchayat.
The eighth standard plus students will not only learn more about basic preventive measures but also spread awareness about the same to the community at large and could even organise awareness classes for the public during the holidays with the help of local libraries and public health centres.
Dr B. Padmakumar, additional professor at Alappuzha medical college, who designed the programme, says the first module was on general health problems, and the second one is on communicable diseases.
“The delegates are being taught to check blood pressure, pulse and dental heath. Road safety and administering first aid have been included in the modules. Hygiene, both public and personal, is also part of the training sessions. The students are being trained by medical professionals and a visit to a medical college will be part of the training programme. The training programme started last Sunday at the Government Model Residential School, Punnapra, with the support of the Institute of Human Resources Development (IHRD) and will end by Friday,” he said.
One of the aims of the project is to create awareness about good health practices and hygiene in schools.
"The district panchayat had implemented this project as a subsidiary of the health @ school project, which received immense response from the public. This training programme comes after the state government took up the project after it made an impact at district level,” Dr Padmakumar said.
These student doctors were provided white overcoats labelled ‘student doctors' and simplified study materials on lifestyle diseases by P K Jayalakshmi, the minister for the Welfare of Backward Communities, on Friday. The students were selected from standards VIII, IX, X, Plus one and plus two.
