Yeddyurappa fit, back in jail today; bail hearing deferred

The Karnataka high court on Tuesday put off former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa's bail plea, leaving him little option but to go back to jail or plead with the authorities to allow him to stay put in a hospital.

Justice B.V. Pinto adjourned to Thursday the hearing on interim bail sought by Yeddyurappa, who was arrested Saturday in connection with two corruption cases, as prosecution lawyers sought time to submit their objections for granting bail.

Yeddyurappa had filed two bail pleas in the high court Monday, one for interim bail and another for regular bail. He has sought interim bail as hearing in the regular bail will take time.

Yeddyurappa spent only a few hours in the Parappana Agrahara jail in Bangalore suburb late Saturday as he was shifted to the government-run Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research early on Sunday after he complained of chest pain.

He is to be discharged from the Institute later Tuesday as angiogram done on Monday showed no blockages in his heart, according to the institute's director C. N. Manjunath.

Yeddyurappa was on Saturday sent to judicial custody till October 22 by special Lokayukta court judge N.K. Sudhindra Rao in two of five cases of corruption and illegal land deals filed by two Bangalore advocates in Januaray 2011.

The advocates, Sirajin Bhasha and N.K. Balaraj, have charged Yeddyurappa, his two sons — BJP Lok Sabha member B.Y. Raghavendra and B.Y. Vijayendra — and son-in-law R. Sohan Kumar of conspiracy to denotify government land in return for monetary gains.

Former state Muzrai (endowments) minister S.N. Krishnaiah Shetty, BJP legislator Hemachanda Sagar and several others are also accused in the cases.

Rao has given conditional bail to all the accused, except Yeddyurappa and Shetty, who too has moved the high court for bail.

Shetty's bail plea will be heard on Wednesday.
