Work delay hits water supply
Vijayawada: The irrigation officials are facing the wrath of farmers as the canals are not in a position to carry their full capacity of water due to delay in delta modernisation works.
The irrigation officials are releasing 10,000 cusecs of water to Krishna eastern canal and 6,000 cusecs to Krishna western canal as the Prakasam barrage received more than one lakh cusecs of floodwater from Nagarjunasagar.
The officials are facing hardship to release water to the canals as the modernisation works of the canals is not completed at several places.
The officials released 1,000 cusecs of water to Eluru canal on Thursday. As the water is overflowing due to weak bunds and sluices at several places as the modernisation works are pending, the officials are unable to increase the release of water.
Meanwhile, farmers led by Telugu Desam leaders staged rasta roko at Perikeedu on Machilipatnam-Kalluru highway on Friday demanding release of water to the canal. The agitating farmers were arrested. Superintendent engineer K.N. Murthy said that the canals would get water in two days.
