Whisleblowers cannot be charged: BJP
The main Opposition BJP on Tuesday maintained whisleblowers cannot be charged in a case when others have been charged for bribe-giving in the same. Reacting to the arrest of the former aide of senior BJP leader L.K. Advani, Mr Sudheendra Kulkarni, in the cash-for-vote scam, the BJP said it was unfortunate
that no questioning has been done so far of the real beneficiaries of the scam. The CPI reacted on the issue by asking for a “wider probe” in the case.
“We respect the court’s decision. We have nothing to comment on it,” said BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman, She however, said, “Those who benefitted from the cash-for-vote scam, those who had shown currency chests to US embassy officials had not even been questioned. We are concerned as those who retained power due to this scam have not even been called (by the investigating agencies and the court).”
A Delhi court Tuesday ordered arrest of Mr Kulkarni, who was sent to Tihar jail for his alleged role in the 2008 cash-for-vote scam. The court ordered that Mr Kulkarni be taken into judicial custody.
Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said, “There cannot be a charge of entrapment against whistleblowers when there is a charge of bribe-giving against others,” in a reference to former SP leader Amar Singh.
