Violence mars Government staff strike
Thiruvananthapuram: Functioning of government offices and schools was badly hit amid a series of ugly and violent scenes, as sections of government employees and teachers began an indefinite strike in the state on Tuesday.
The government claimed 62 percent of the officials and teachers turned up for work. Unruly scenes, including forcible blocking and abusing of employees who tried to enter offices, damaging and deflating of KSRTC bus tyres, pouring black-oil and cow dung on those who turned up for work, and severing telephone lines of government offices, were reported from across the state.
People’s movement was also affected as KSRTC services remained largely off the roads owing to the 12-hour strike by pro-left employees. A majority of private buses also kept off the roads until the strike by private bus workers was called off by afternoon. According to official sources, about 60 percent of the employees turned up for work and 2131 out of the 4250 schedules of the KSRTC were operated.
