Villainy is dead. Long live Pran!
Veteran Bollywood actor Pran Krishan Sikand, popularly known as Pran, who played the dreaded villain and loveable character with élan in hits like Don, Milan, Madhumati, Bobby, Zanjeer and Ram Aur Shyam, breathed his last at Lilavati Hospital in suburban Bandra on Friday evening. He was 93.
He is survived by his wife Shukla Sikand, sons Arvind and Sunil and daughter Pinky Sikand. Pran, who had been suffering from pneumonia, succumbed to the disease at around 8.30 pm on Friday.
The legendary actor, who was also diabetic, had been admitted to the hospital since almost a month and was being treated by chest physician Sanjeev Mehta, said a senior doctor from the hospital.
Sources from the hospital said that he was on ventilator for a couple of days. “He died of multi-organ failure,” the doctor said. The actor had been intermittently in and out of the hospital for the past few months for pulmonological problems.
The veteran actor, who had a six-decade-long career that saw him performing in over 400 films, was conferred the country’s highest cinema honour — Dada Saheb Phalke award — in April this year.
Filmmaker Karan Johar later tweeted that Pran would be cremated at Shivaji Park electrical crematorium at 12 pm on Saturday.
