UP village bans cellphones for unmarried girls
A village panchayat in Muzaffarnagar district has banned the use of mobile phones by unmarried girls.
The panchayat has ruled that the use of mobile phones by unmarried girls helps them in eloping with their lovers. An all-caste and community panchayat that met at Lank village, discussed the “bad effects” of the use of mobile phones by youngsters, particularly girls. Panchayat spokesman Rajender Malick said, “The panchayat has imposed a ban on the usage of mobile phones by unmarried girls to prevent them from eloping with young boys against the wishes of their parents.”

Gujarat auto driver held for assault
Ahmedabad, Nov. 23: An auto rickshaw driver, hailing from Rajasthan, was on Tuesday arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a 22-year-old Taiwanese woman here.
“We have arrested Punam Dhobi, a native of Bhilwara district in Rajasthan, in connection with the sexual assault on a foreign national in the city,” joint commissioner of police Satish Sharma told reporters here.
A case of rape was registered against Dhobi at Vastrapur police station on Monday, following a complaint filed by a local friend of the woman, he said.
The woman, an employee of a private firm here, said the police. —PTI

Demand for Chouhan’s resignation

Nov. 23: The Madhya Pradesh Assembly on Tuesday reverberated with the main Opposition Congress MLAs’ demand for chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s resignation. In the midst of pandemonium, the House was briefly adjourned before it was adjourned for the entire day in the pre-lunch session.
The Congress MLAs, led by the deputy leader of the Opposition Chaudhary Rakesh Singh Chaturverdi, stood up and began targeting the chief minister demanding his resignation on the issue of corruption immediately after the Question Hour. They also rushed to the well of the House and used all their lung power against Mr Chouhan.

International team to guide on bird flu

Nov. 23: The Food and Agriculture Organisation’s chief technical adviser on HPAI (highly pathogenic avian influenza) in visiting India to build international collaborations and advise local institutions on strengthening emergency preparedness to tackle new and emerging strains of the deadly bird flu virus.
Dr Leo Loth is accompanied by Dr David Castellan, regional veterinary epidemiologist, FAO regional representative, Bangkok, and Dr M.V. Subha Rao, national project consultant, FAO, India. The team is slated to make detailed presentations to veterinary microbiologists and scientists working in public health.
