Victimised women can get money back
A victimised wife can get back the money that her parents spent for her marriage, from her husband, a court has ruled here.
A lab technician working at a private hospital here petitioned the Egmore court accusing her husband of abusing her in drunken state and preventing her from helping her mentally challenged mother.
After hearing her case, the court ordered the errant husband to pay her Rs 15 lakh towards the expenses incurred by her family for the marriage that has now failed.
Kamala (names changed) wanted to lead a meaningful life instead of being tormented by a drunkard husband, who abused her every day and took away her earnings to buy liquor.
On hearing about the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act (PWDVA) through the city protection officer S. Pandiyammal, she decided to seek justice.
The local police station registered her complaint and the protection officer moved the court without payment of fee.
Kamala told the court that she stayed at a working women’s hostel since her husband Ramu and his family members threatened they would kill her.
“My husband would come home drunk almost everyday. And his mother would abuse me saying I did not bring enough dowry and 100 sovereigns. They even came to the hospital, where I was working and shouted at me”, she said in quivering voice.
She pleaded for the return of her wedding expenses and also the money she had paid towards Ramu’s house loan.
Judge M.Gopalan wanted to hear the husband’s version but the latter did not turn up despite three summons.
Consequently, the judge ordered Ramu not to disturb Kamala at her workplace and also pay her Rs 15 lakh as reimbursement of the marriage expenses and housing loan within two months.
