VHP behind Silchar temple desecration in Assam: Gogoi
Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi here on Monday said that the Vishwa Hindu Parishad was behind the desecration of a Hindu temple in Silchar in southern Assam’s Barak Valley on Sunday that triggered a mob violence.
Informing that situation was brought under control, Mr Gogoi told reporters: “The police have been asked to take all necessary steps to stop the situation from taking any communal colour.”
Accusing the VHP of tarrying to create communal tension, Mr Gogoi said: “It was persuading the Hindu agenda of BJP to create communal polarisation in the country.”
Earlier on Sunday at least 30 people, including the superintendent of police and seven policemen, were injured in police firing after a mob went on a rampage at Rongpur area of Silchar.
DIG (southern range) Binod Kumar told this newspaper that district administration has asked the Army to remain alert and imposed prohibitory order in the district.
The incident occurred when a group of people went on a rampage burning vehicles and pelting stones late on Sunday night, after reports of some objectionable items was spotted at three places of worship in Rongpur area.
Mr Kumar said that police first resorted to lathicharge and used teargas to disperse the mob, which started pelting stones on police also.
He said that in the stone pelting and police lathi-charge, around 30 people, including the superintendent of police Diganta Bora and seven other policemen, were injured.
