Valentine's Day: Chennai's Moral police gets set
With just a day to go for the universal celebration of love, the Chennai’s moral brigade are already firming up plans to throw cold water on the enthusiasm of the young lovers who have waited all along for the special day to arrive.
If sources are to be believed, the Hindu Makkal Katchi is planning a wedding of a dog and a donkey in Chennai, in mockery of the concept of Valentine’s Day. “The idea is to make our youngsters understand only dogs and donkeys publicly display their love. Cultured humans don’t,” says a source.
While refusing to comment on the plans, HMK secretary B.R. Kumar, ho- wever, said the Valentine’s Day celebrations ought to be stalled.
Terming it a cultural assassination, Mr Kumar said the West had deliberately made such days popular ‘only to keep our youngsters in a perennial state of trance.’ “They do not want our youth to work or think, lest we become superpower in a decade,” reasons Kumar.
Hindu Munnani leader Rama Gopalan too has condemned the Valentine’s Day celebrations and has urged spiritual leaders like Jaggi Vasudev, Shri Shri Ravishankar and Sankaracharya to initiate a campaign against such western concepts and create an awareness among the public.
Undeterred, lovers are raring to go. “I could have proposed to my girl friend on any day, but doing so on Valentine’s not just makes it special but memorable too. She can never forget when I proposed to her, I cannot let these elements spoil my day,” reasons 23- year old Jeevan, a software employee.
