US Prez acknowledges role of Clinton, Bush
Even as he effusively praised two successive governments, without naming them, in India for having taken the relationship between India and the United States to a new level, US President Barack Obama acknowledged the role of his predecessors, namely Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, in forging closer ties with India.
During the course of his address to both Houses of Parliament, Mr Obama said, “Here in India, two successive governments led by different parties have recognised that deeper partnership with America is both natural and necessary. In the United States, both of my predecessors — one Democrat, one Republican — worked to bring us closer, leading to increased trade and a landmark civil nuclear agreement.”
It is a known fact that it was Mr Clinton, a Democrat, who in 2000 broke the ice by visiting India — the first by an American President since Jimmy Carter’s visit in 1978.
It was followed by Mr Bush, a Republican, in 2006. The visit of Mr Clinton led to an increased volume of trade between the two countries and the visit of Mr Bush finalised the civil nuclear deal between the two nations.
