Uproar in RS over Telangana issue
The decision to create Telangana and demand for carving out Bodoland state, led to repeated adjournments in Rajya Sabha on the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament on Monday.
Soon after the Upper House paid obituary references, two TDP members entered the well opposing creation of separate Telengana state. Bodoland People’s Front’s (BPF) Biswajit Daimary too entered the well carrying a placard.
Earlier, DMK chief M. Karunanidhi’s daughter M Kanimozhi, who was re-elected to the Upper House, took oath in Tamil. But it was master blaster Sachin Tendulkar who was the cynosure of all eyes. The nominated MP walked in with minister of state for parliamentary affairs Rajeev Shukla well before the House was called to order. He was also seen walking up to the Prime Minister and greeting him.
While TDP members Y.S. Chowdhary and C.M. Ramesh raised banners against division of Andhra Pradesh, Mr Daimary held banner that read “If Telangana, Why Not Bodoland?”
“I am sorry you can’t do this. No banner shall be shown,” Chairman Hamid Ansari said to unheeding members, asking them to go back to their seats.
Upset with members not listening to his appeal, Dr Ansari adjourned the House for 10 minutes saying he was forced to do so because of “disturbances created by three members in the well”. When the House reassembled, similar scenes were witnessed. Amid slogan shouting, the Chairman adjourned the House till noon.
When the House met at noon, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh introduced the new ministers inducted in the Union Council of Ministers. Minister of state for parliamentary affairs Rajeev Shukla informed the House about revocation of President’s Rule in Jharkhand.
Even as TDP members were shouting slogans in the well and waving placards, AIADMK’s V. Maitreyan sought to raise the issue of attack on Tamil fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy and wanted a response from the Prime Minister.
The House was adjourned again till 2 pm.
