UPA to counter Opp. with report
The Congress-led UPA will counter the Opposition attack on the Bhopal gas tragedy on the basis of the report of the Group of Ministers (GoM) and a decision to be taken by the Union Cabinet on it on June 25.
The Opposition, especially the BJP and the Left, is planning to put the Centre in the dock over the issue of escape of the former chief of Union Carbide Warren Anderson during the Monsoon Session of Parliament next month.
But the Congress managers view that this issue may not influence the whole session. The government’s thrust will obviously be on the rehabilitation of the victims while the Opposition will try to get mileage from the release of Anderson under the pressure from outside forces.
Madhya Pradesh minister for Bhopal gas tragedy relief and rehabilitation Babulal Gaur on Monday expressed unhappiness over the assistance package. He was a member of the GoM.
However, GoM sources said Mr Gaur was “satisfied” with the package in the meetings and outside he may be taking a different line suggesting that it could be due to the pressure from BJP. Mr Gaur described the package as “Unth ke muh mein jeera”.
“Whatever we have asked, we got very little. We expressed our anger and unhappiness at the meeting. As against our demand of total assistance of Rs 5,000 crores for gas victims, we have been given a package of Rs 1,332.75 crores which is less,” Mr Gaur told reporters here.
