Ukhand ‘village of widows’ to be a model for others
The Deoli-Bramhagram village of Uttarakhand that has come to be known as the “Village of Widows” after 54 men of the village went missing in the calamity that struck the region in June, will now be developed as a model village.
Sulabh International, a leading NGO that has adopted the village, will provide a pension of `2,000 per month to 154 families that are left with female members and some elderly persons. A sum of `1,000 will be given to each child.
According to a release issued by Sulabh International, the Uttarakhand minister for tourism, Ms Amrita Rawat, handed over this month’s pension some of the kids and women whose husbands are still missing.
The NGO, meanwhile, will also ensure all-round development these twin villages, which is about 7 km from Guptkashi. Sulabh International founder Bindeshwar Pathak said, “We do not want the village to get a tag of ‘Village of Widows’. We want it to become a model village and we will take care of all the needs. We will impart vocational training to widows and ensure proper education to the kids.”
The NGO will give `2,000 to the unemployed youths as monthly allowance so that they can start earning their livelihood and children can pursue their studies. From next month all of them will receive the amount from nearby bank where accounts are being opened for them.
