UGC pitches for dept to train teachers
With India facing a shortage of an estimated 1.4 million trained teachers, the University Grants Commission is learnt to have written to all Central universities requesting them to open a department of education during the current Five-Year Plan.
Thirty per cent or 12 of the 40 Central universities in the country currently do not have a functional department for school of education.
The UGC is also learnt to have promised these universities the necessary funds for the operationalisation of these departments.
According to human resource development ministry statistics, Uttar Pradesh needs three lakh teachers in schools, the maximum in the country. Other states facing a severe shortage of teachers include Bihar (2.60 lakh) and West Bengal (one lakh).
It is understood that almost 20 per cent of all teachers appointed in the country do not fulfil the norms of the National Council for Teachers’ Education ( NCTE), the apex body for teacher education, training and research in the country.
