Television is passé and computers, laptops and mobiles are the new mode of entertainment for the youth.
A nationwide survey conducted by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in 12 cities has revealed that a very small percentage prefers television, only .02 per cent students in Lucknow have marked television as their favourite gadget. This is lowest figure among the cities surveyed.
In Lucknow, for instance, about 1,200 students took the survey and more than 80 per cent said that they were addicted to Facebook. Two years ago, in a similar survey, only 16 per cent students were hooked onto social networking sites. One out of every four students uses Twitter whereas Orkut usage stands at 42.9 per cent.
Every second student in Lucknow owns a laptop and every fourth student is tweeting. Eighty per cent access Internet from home and 21 per cent get access in schools.
The survey revealed that while IT and engineering are the top career choices among Lucknowites, only 3 per cent students seek a government job, which is less than half the all-India figures. Media is the second most sought after job nationally.
Another interesting trend revealed in the survey is the growing number of mobile users in the city. Three out of four students own a mobilephone which adds up to 74.7 per cent mobile coverage among the youth. Nearly 19.2 per cent students own a laptop, 15. 4 per cent have gaming consoles and 12. 5 per cent have MP3 players.
Nearly 48 per cent students in Lucknow use email to communicate as compared to 44.12 per cent nationally. Voice-calls are still the preferred communication mode, closely followed by email. SMS, Instant Messaging and Facebook and Twitter follow as the preferred modes of communication.
Talking to reporters, while unveiling the survey results, TCS principal consultant Jayant Krishna said, “The youth in Lucknow is at par with the rest of the country and it would be wrong to assume that the city is lagging behind in the use of technology,” he pointed out.
