Tsunami families await homes
Ramanathapuram: Delay in completion of houses, which were damaged in the Tsunami in 2004, has affected members of 600 families in Devipattinam and other areas in this district.
According to Damayanthi, a resident, the officials promised to rebuild the damaged houses within one year but the contractors for 'various reasons' had not completed them.
"As it is raining almost daily we are scared of sleeping inside the semi-finished houses as they could collapse at any time", said Kalaimathi, another woman.
Officials said the second phase of construction of 5400 houses, each costing Rs.3.40 lakh, had started in the Tsunami hit areas of the state.
Project Director Anandharaju said the 600 houses would be completed before December this year.Construction work had been interrupted due to rains, he said, adding, the houses are nearing completion and only 'small small' works were pending".
