Alleging corruption in the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project, TRS on Wednesday demanded that the Andhra Pradesh government hold an open debate on the project report.

"This project appears to be more of a real estate project than a rail project aimed at grabbing almost 300 acres of prime lands worth thousands of crores of rupees. We also have serious reservations on certain provisions of the Concession Agreement signed by the government for this project," TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao said in a letter to Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy.

He said several historical monuments in the city would be destroyed due to the project.

"The elevated corridors and stations pose serious threat to several historic heritage buildings and bazaars in the form of defacement of some precincts and total demolition of some others. Our party is not opposed to development and modernisation of the city's infrastructure but will not allow it at the cost of the very historic character of the city," Rao said in the letter.

Pointing out alleged flaws in the project, he demanded that the government hold open discussions on Detailed Project Report (DPR) and Concessional agreement and also change the contents of agreement to protect the government land and overall interests of people.

TRS MLAs also met Reddy today over the issue.
