Trinamul’s Mukul is MoS in rail ministry
As expected, Mukul Roy of the Trinamul Congress has been appointed Trinamul Congres chief Mamata Banerjee’s successor in the railway ministry as a minister of state. Ms Banerjee who will be sworn in as the chief minister of West Bengal on Friday resigned as railway minister on Thursday.
Mr Roy who is currently minister of state for shipping will for now hold additional charge of the railways.
The railway portfolio will be held by the PM said a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique issued on Thursday evening.
Mr Roy is expected to be elevated to Cabinet rank when the next Cabinet reshuffle takes place, said Trinamul sources.
With the appointment of Mr Roy, the railway ministry will now have three ministers of state — the other two being K.H. Muniyappa and Bharatsinh Solanki. Mr Roys’ appointment was expected given the fact that he is a trusted lieutenant of the Trinamul chief. He had accompanied ms Banerjee to Delhi when she came visiting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi earlier this week.
On the eve of Ms Banerjee taking over as the Bengal CM, the PM conveyed his good wishes to her and assured her of the Centre’s wholhearted support.
“As you begin your term as Chief Minister of West Bengal, my very warm wishes are with you. I have no doubt by the dint of your courageous leadership and commitment to the public good, West Bengal will achieve rapid progress in the future,” he said.
He added, “I assure you of our wholehearted support in your task ahead while expressing his deep appreciation for having been “a valued colleague in the union council of ministers and we have benefitted immensely from your knowledge and experience”.
