Trinamul justifies Kalam stand, decides to wait
The Trinamul Congress justified its decision of announcing former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s name as the presidential candidate.
“When our leader announced the name of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, we thought he would be the best presidential candidate and we still believe it,” Trinamul Congress Legislature Party leader in the Lok Sabha Sudip Bandyopadhyay claimed.
On being asked about the Trinamul Congress’ next step on the presidential elections, especially after Dr Kalam announced that he would not contest, Mr Bandyopadhyay said, “We will wait and our leader will take the appropriate decision at the proper time. Situations will take shape according to the developments. But we are extremely honoured when A.P.J. Abdul Kalam expressed his gratitude to Mamata Banerjee for wanting him to be the candidate. We will urge him to reconsider his decision.”
In the meeting, Ms Banerjee also instructed her party MPs and MLAs not to cast their votes in favour of Pranab Mukherjee in the presidential elections.
“We won’t support him. It is our decision. If anybody tenders his or her vote in favour of him, the party will take disciplinary action,” she cautioned.
