Tremors felt in north eastern states, no report of casualty
Tremors of slight to moderate intensity on Sunday shook north eastern states but there was no immediate report of any casualty or damage.
Panic-striken people ran out of their dwellings in many areas as the temblors hit Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland and Tripura.
A mild intensity quake was felt in parts of Assam, officials said.
Its epicentre was located at Majuli island in upper Assam. Tremors were also felt in parts of lower Assam.
A ‘slight’ intensity earthquake measuring 4.8 in Richter Scale took place in Arunachal Pradesh in the early hour.
The Meteorological Department in New Delhi described the intensity of the Arunachal quake as slight and said it was felt at 1.13 AM. Its epicentre lay at a depth of 10 kms.
A report from Imphal said that a mild tremor also took place in Manipur. It shook parts of the state at 9.45 AM, officials said. The Met office said that a ‘moderate’ quake of 5.8 on the Richter Scale occurred in Phek in Nagaland at 9.44 AM. Phek is located 80 kms east of Kohima and the focal depth of the tremor was 50 kms, it said.
The impact of the tremor was felt all over Nagaland and people were seen running out of their houses in Kohima. A report from Shillong, said people, including those visiting churches, came out to open areas following the quake.
Officials said there was no immediate report of any casualty or damage in any of the north eastern states.
