Trace real beneficiary: BJP
The BJP on Tuesday said arrest of former SP leader Amar Singh in the cash-for-vote scam is âa step in the right directionâ. However, it termed the arrest of its former MPs âcompletely malafideâ.
Demanding a deeper probe into Congressâs role which the BJP said was the âreal beneficiaryâ of the trust vote in 2008, the main Opposition demanded the source of money allegedly used to buy votes of MPs should be traced.
In his reaction, CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta said ââthe right man is in the right placeââ and it was an ââeloquent testimonyââ to how the government was protecting ââcriminalsââ. He, however, demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh clarify whose âfrontmanâ Mr Singh was as it was the Congress which had âbenefitedâ from the scam. The Samajwadi Party (SP) also termed its former leaderâs arrest a âwhitewashâ, alleging he had been made a âscapegoatâ in the case by the Delhi police.
Reacting on the issue, BJP spokesperson Ravishankar Prasad said no action has been initiated against the beneficiaries of the scam, while those MPs who were whistle-blowers in the case were arrested and sent to jail. âThe larger question remains from where did the money come, at whose instance was Amar Singh active, and who was the beneficiary. This is very important for investigation as Amar Singh was not a minister in UPA, nor Samajwadi Party a part of the government,â said Mr Prasad.
SP spokesperson Mohan Singh said: âHe (Amar) has been made a scapegoat. This is nothing but a whitewash by the Delhi police following strictures from the top court.â He said the Delhi police should follow the SC directives and find the source of the money which will be the clinching evidence in the case.
When asked whether the SP would raise the issue in Parliament, Mohan Singh said a decision in this regard would be taken Wednesday.
