Trace real beneficiary: BJP

The BJP on Tuesday said arrest of former SP leader Amar Singh in the cash-for-vote scam is “a step in the right direction”. However, it termed the arrest of its former MPs “completely malafide”.

Demanding a deeper probe into Congress’s role which the BJP said was the “real beneficiary” of the trust vote in 2008, the main Opposition demanded the source of money allegedly used to buy votes of MPs should be traced.
In his reaction, CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta said ‘’the right man is in the right place’’ and it was an ‘’eloquent testimony’’ to how the government was protecting ‘’criminals’’. He, however, demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh clarify whose “frontman” Mr Singh was as it was the Congress which had “benefited” from the scam. The Samajwadi Party (SP) also termed its former leader’s arrest a “whitewash”, alleging he had been made a “scapegoat” in the case by the Delhi police.
Reacting on the issue, BJP spokesperson Ravishankar Prasad said no action has been initiated against the beneficiaries of the scam, while those MPs who were whistle-blowers in the case were arrested and sent to jail. “The larger question remains from where did the money come, at whose instance was Amar Singh active, and who was the beneficiary. This is very important for investigation as Amar Singh was not a minister in UPA, nor Samajwadi Party a part of the government,” said Mr Prasad.
SP spokesperson Mohan Singh said: “He (Amar) has been made a scapegoat. This is nothing but a whitewash by the Delhi police following strictures from the top court.” He said the Delhi police should follow the SC directives and find the source of the money which will be the clinching evidence in the case.
When asked whether the SP would raise the issue in Parliament, Mohan Singh said a decision in this regard would be taken Wednesday.
