Top cops gobble up public plots
In gross violation of its original Act, Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) has allotted flats in Nerkundram to several senior IPS officers under the ‘Own your house’ scheme.
The beneficiary top cops include Chennai police commissioner J.K. Tripathy, ADGPs (law and order) S. George, C.K. Gandhirajan, T.K. Rajendran and Ashutosh Shukla and north zone IG Sylendra Babu.
The officers have been allotted houses in Nerkundram even after they availed similar benefits from TNHB earlier.
This in gross violation of government order number 2063 which states applicants should not own a house in any municipal corporation, special grade and ‘A’ grade municipalities or in any of the capital towns in the country either in his/her name or in the name of the spouse or minor children.
However, annual immovable property returns filed by the officers with the Union home ministry in January 2011 show they own houses allotted by TNHB under the Mogappair Eri and Nolambur schemes of the 1990s and 2004.
ADGP George mentions in his annual returns that he paid Rs 1 lakh for a house in Nerkundram under “IAS/IPS own your housing scheme”.
Mr Gandhirajan has submitted that the present value of his 3,003-square-foot house under the Mogappair Eri scheme was Rs 1.87 lakh.
The government order number 56 dated February 2011, under which the officers were allotted houses in Nerkundram, states applicants who have already availed the benefit of allotment from TNHB under the government discretionary quota in corporation limits, will not be considered.
